Paul Bunyan road race Sunday in Bangor

The Bangor Police Department advises motorists to use caution Sunday, as 400 runners from 39 states compete in this year’s Paul Bunyan Marathon, starting at 6 a.m. on the corner of Main and Buck streets near the Paul Bunyan statue.

Two officers will be posted at 7:30 a.m. at the intersections of State Street and Hogan Road and Stillwater Avenue and Essex Street, to help direct traffic, according to Lt. Jeff Millard.

“My advice to travelers is to be patient,” Millard said.

Officers will also use cones to close off portions of the roadway for runners. The 26.2-mile race, which was an annual event from 1975 to 1984, will be held Sunday for the first time in 22 years. It will end at the Cameron Stadium finish line off Mount Hope Avenue and is expected to last through Sunday afternoon.
