Hampden wins state crown in senior softball

PORTLAND – Lacey Littlefield and Hailey Smith combined for a no-hitter to lead Hampden by North Portland 7-1 for the Maine State Senior League softball title over the weekend.

Littlefield and Smith also combined for 15 strikeouts and gave up no walks.

Eva Shannon hit a triple while Kate Peverada singled and doubled for the state champs. Kate Plowman, Smith, Littlefield, Kasey Beucher and Anjelica Davenport each added a single .

Hampden now moves on to its fourth appearance in the Eastern U.S. Regionals in Maryland on July 28 where it will face state champs from New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland.

The winner from that regional advances to the World Series.

District 3, Junior League

Old Town 6, Glenburn 3

At Old Town Sunday, Hannah Morin pitched a four-hitter and also hit a two-run double to lead Old Town to the District 3 Junior League softball title.

Amy Singer had three singles for Old Town while Mallori Emerson and Kate Ouellette each singled twice.

Alexis Casey hit an RBI double.

At Old Town Saturday, Alexis Casey had a triple, a single, and three RBIs to help Glenburn eliminate Bangor.

Katherine Bragg had two singles and Alex Rudzinski hit a two-run double for Glenburn.

Tori Huckstein had a double, single, and two RBIs for Bangor. Sadie Redman added two singles and two RBIs while Hannah Lust added a two-run triple.

At Old Town Saturday, Hannah Morin had a double, a single and an RBI for Old Town.

Whitney Leland singled twice and Katelyn Ouellette hit a three-run triple for Old Town.

Alexis Casey led Glenburn with a double and a run scored.

At Hermon, Kristen Wilcox gave up only one hit and had eight strikeouts to lead Hermon by Lincoln in the Championship game.

Wilcox also hit a home run, a triple and two singles with two RBIs. Kayla Snow hit a double and two singles with three RBIs while Shannon Graves singled and doubled with three RBIs. Kelly Berglund had an RBI single and an RBI double, Amanda Allen treipled with three RBIs and Rachel Guimond singled twice with three RBIs for Hermon.

Sam Boothby had a single for Lincoln.

Baseball

District 3, Junior League

Bangor advances to final

At Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, Bangor remained unbeaten and moved into the championship round while Hampden and Katahdin will play off for the right to play Bangor after Junior League All-Star action over the weekend.

Brewer eliminated Orono-Veazie 6-3 and Hampden ousted Holbrook 9-3 on Saturday. On Sunday, Bangor handed Katahdin its first loss 14-3 and Hampden eliminated Brewer 9-6.

Hampden takes on Katahdin on Wednesday at 5 p.m. The winner advances to the championship round against Bangor on Thursday at 5 p.m. If Bangor loses, then an if-necessary game would be played on Tuesday, July 25.

Brewer 6, Orono-Veazie 3

Colby Small’s RBI single in the third inning gave Brewer the lead for good as they went on to defeat Orono-Veazie on Saturday.

Pat McEwen had an RBI double while Jamie Williamson added an RBI triple for Brewer.

Shane Hass hit two triples with an RBI while Dan Keefe singled twice with an RBI for Orono-Veazie.

Jacob Stevens pitched a three-hit shutout, giving up three walks and striking out three, to lead Hampden by Holbrook on Saturday.

Zach Frish hit a three-run triple and a double while Matt Lindemann hit a triple with two singles and two RBIs. Nolan Tuner tripled and singled while Stevens added two singles.

Brandon Carney hit a double for Holbrook.

Bangor 14, Katahdin Valley 3

Bangor scored eight runs on five hits in the sixth inning to break the game open and defeat Katahdin Valley on Sunday.

Devin Lyshon doubled and singled with an RBI while Bud Angst singled twice with an RBI for Bangor.

Andy Ray hit a double and a single with two RBIs while Ethan Qualey added a double.

Hampden rallied for four runs in the sixth inning to overcome a 6-5 deficit and beat Brewer on Sunday.

The inning was highlighted by Zach Frish’s RBI double and RBI singles by Jonathan Johnson and Matt Lindemann.

Andrew Brown singled twice while Jacob Moore added a double for Hampden.

Eric White had two singles and an RBI while Chase Daniels doubled for Brewer.

At Ellsworth, Seth Cote pitched a shutout, allowing four hits and striking out four, to give Ellsworth the win over Bucksport

Drew Barkhouse had an RBI double while Andrew Hodge drove in a run. Andrew Austin, Jordan Carter and Brad Folmer each had a single for Ellsworth.

Mike Bridges had a double while Cody Farrell, Evan Eldridge and Tyler French each singled for Bucksport.

Bangor 19, Old Town 10

At Old Town Sunday, Brendan Moore led a 20-hit attack by Bangor East with a three doubles and a single as his team eliminated Old Town.

Andrew Hillier had three singles, a double and three RBIs for Bangor East. Xavier Lewis had a pair of two-run homers and a single. Nick Ashey added a two-run homer and a double.

Garvey Melmed had three singles and two RBIs for Old Town. Chris Michaud had two singles and an RBI while Damien Everett hit an RBI double.
