NASCAR’s Schrader 2-for-2 at Wiscasset

WISCASSET – Veteran NASCAR Nextel Cup racer Ken Schrader returned to Wiscasset Raceway for a meet-and-greet session with fans and a little racing too, and he came away with a victory in the 30-lap late-model sportsman.

Schrader took the lead on a lap 16 restart and held off a late charge by Jerry Reynolds of Liberty. It was his second win at Wiscasset as he also won in an appearance last year.

Reynolds was runner-up while Bryan Robbins of Liberty was third. Bill Pinkham of Wiscasset was fourth overall and Chris Thorne of Sidney wound up fifth.

Saturday’s racing card was shortened due to a long delay following the fifth red flag stoppage in four races. Track promoter David St. Clair reluctantly pulled the plug on the rest of the schedule due to the delay, flaring tempers, and a lack of enough safety crews in place and ready to respond.

Unity Raceway

At Unity, Saturday’s searing temperatures seemed to heat up the drivers and their intensity levels as Unity Raceway was host to multiple crashes, two of which came in the Coca-Cola Late Model Pro Fours heat race.

The destruction started in the Coca-Cola race when Norm Cummings of Augusta and Tim Robinson of Clinton began battling for the early lead and Cummings entered turn three too hot. He spun, got oof the track, and slid into the bank in burn four, flipping over onto his roof. Cummings was uninjured, but his car was done for the day. On the restart, Greg Cummings of Augusta and Robinson came together off turn four, causing Cummings to spin down the front stretch and collect Dustin Drake of Dover-Foxcroft in the mishap. The other drivers were able to miss the wreckage. Not only was Robinson able to win the race with his scuffed-up car, Drake finished second and Steve Rackliff of Sparks was third.
