The Brewer Falcons and Bangor Comrades, who have combined to win the last seven American Legion Zone 1 baseball championships, are the top two seeds for this year’s zone tournament that begins Friday at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor.
Regular-season play concluded Tuesday, leaving Brewer (19-3) as the zone’s No. 1 seed for the second straight year and 18-4 Bangor as the No. 2 seed for the second straight year.
Brewer is one of four South Division teams to qualify for the six-team field, along with No. 3 Trenton (15-7), No. 4 Waldo (12-10) and Penquis (11-11).
Presque Isle (11-11) joins Bangor as a tournament qualifier from the North Division.
Presque Isle defeated Penquis 7-6 in nine innings Tuesday night, leaving those teams with identical records.
Presque Isle coach Chris Parsons said after the game that he wouldn’t know until tiebreakers are employed Wednesday whether his team or Penquis would be seeded fifth, with the other team earning the sixth seed.
The double-elimination zone tourney opens with a tripleheader Friday, as Brewer squares off against the No. 6 seed at noon, followed by Bangor against the No. 5 seed at 4 p.m. and Trenton against Waldo at 8 p.m.
Presque Isle 7, Penquis 6, 9 inn.
At Presque Isle, Hunter Caron singled home Logan York with one-out in the ninth inning as the Patriots rallied from a 6-0 deficit.
Presque Isle closed the gap with four runs in the bottom of the sixth, then forced extra innings on winning pitcher’s Matt McGlinn’s two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
Logan York hit three doubles for the Patriots, while Caron singled twice.
David White doubled and singled with an RBI for Penquis, while Josh Pelletier singled twice with an RBI and Joey Kane also singled twice.
