Guitarist Burgess to play Arcady festival

Arcady Music Society will welcome guitarist David Burgess for the second week of its 2006 Arcady Summer Music Festival.

Praised by musicians and critics worldwide, David Burgess is recognized as one of today’s outstanding guitarists. His international appearances as soloist and chamber musician have taken him to concert halls throughout North and South America, Europe and the Far East.

There will be four opportunities to hear David Burgess:

. 7:30 Monday, July 24, Unitarian Universalist Church in Bangor.

. 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 25, Center Theatre in Dover-Foxcroft.

. 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 26, Alamo Theatre in Bucksport.

. 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 27, St. Saviour’s Episcopal Church in Bar Harbor.

Arcady supports and showcases the talented young musicians of Maine and as is customary, will present winners from this year’s Arcady Youth Competition at the beginning of each concert. This week’s series will feature pianists Will Bristol of Brunswick and Aiesha Sargent of Orono.

Admission is $17, $10 for college students with an ID. Those 18 and younger may attend free. For information, visit www.arcady.org, or call 669-4225.

Highlights of Burgess’ recent seasons include concert tours of Europe, recitals in New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Baltimore, Boston and many other cities. He has made numerous appearances as an orchestral soloist, including featured performances with the Philharmonia Virtuosi of New York, and the American Chamber Orchestra at the Kennedy Center.

First prize winner in the Andr?s Segovia Fellowship Competition in New York City, he has won top honors in the Ponce International Competition in Mexico City, the Guitar ’81 Competition in Toronto and the 31st International Music Competition in Munich.

Burgess began studying guitar in Mexico City with Argentine guitarist Manuel Lopez Ramos. He received a bachelor’s degree in music at the University of Washington, and a Diploma di Merito at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy, where he studied with Oscar Ghiglia.

Through his extensive travels in both Spain and Latin America, Burgess has explored traditional guitar styles, along with many popular and folkloric types of music. He has acquired one of the largest collections of Latin American guitar music in the United States. His concert program for Arcady will feature the music of Brazil.

A former guitar instructor at the University of Washington, and the Cornish Institute of the Arts, Burgess resides in New York City, where he has performed at Town Hall, Carnegie Recital Hall and Lincoln Center. He has recorded for Musical Heritage Society, Tritone, Athena and Camerata Records.
