Mayor for the day

The Bangor City Council meeting was brought to order on June 12 by Sean Michael Walsh, a pupil at All Saints Catholic School. Michael, as part of a fundraising event at the school, was chosen Honorary Mayor for the Day.

Michael led the council in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, then banged the gavel to officially commence the council’s regularly scheduled meeting. He was presented with an official framed document commemorating the honor.

Mayor John Cashwell attended Sean’s class and spoke to the pupils about city government and the position of mayor.

Pageant contestant

Kristin Cote was selected to represent Maine at the Miss Teenage America Pageant 2006 held July 1-8 in Nashville, Tenn., where she competed for $70,000 in scholarships and the title of Miss Teen America 2006. She is the daughter of Michael Cote of Glenburn and Karen Cote of Orland.

Scholar Leader Awards

These area middle school pupils were honored May 25 at the seventh annual Scholar Leader Awards banquet in Augusta:

Scholarship recipients

BRADLEY – The Shoestring Thrift Shop in Bradley recently gave three $500 scholarships to seniors at area high schools. Recipients are Lindsay Randall of Brewer, Nicholas Vaughan of Brewer and Sara Lammert of John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor.

The Shoestring Thrift Shop, located on the Bradley Road, Route 178, is a nonprofit organization run by volunteers who collect donations of clothing to sell at reasonable prices. Shop hours are 9 a.m.-noon Wednesdays, and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays.

Colleges

Barnard College

NEW YORK – Arielle Bridges was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa on May 15. She graduated summa cum laude from Barnard College on May 16 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She is the daughter of Donna Accettullo of Brewer.

Emerson College

BOSTON – Kahlan Bridges was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Emerson College. He will spend the fall semester studying in the Netherlands. He is the son of Donna Accettullo of Brewer.

Franklin & Marshall College

LANCASTER, Pa. – Patrick Frazier was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Franklin & Marshall College. A 2002 graduate of Bangor High School, he is a Presidential Scholar.

He served on the staff of the college’s newspaper, The College Reporter, played on the men’s varsity tennis team and is a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He is the son of Kathryn and Kevin Frazier of Bangor.

Georgetown University

WASHINGTON – Brianne J. Steele graduated magna cum laude from Georgetown University with degrees in French and biology.

She will attend Georgetown University School of Medicine in the fall. A 2002 graduate of Bangor High School, she is the daughter of Erik and Nan Steele.
