WALDOBORO – A Thomaston man was killed Tuesday night in a single-vehicle accident on Route 220, and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department was trying on Wednesday to determine precisely what happened.
Nathan E. Stevens, 23, died when his 1998 Ford Escort hit a utility pole on Friendship Road.
The accident occurred about 8:30 p.m.
“At this time we suspect speed is … a factor,” said sheriff’s Lt. Rand Maker on Wednesday morning, adding that the reconstruction had not been completed. Blood test results checking for alcohol or drugs will not be available for some time, he said.
Stevens was not wearing a seat belt at the time he lost control of his vehicle. He was traveling alone. His girlfriend lives in Waldoboro, Maker said, but police did not yet know if he was headed there when the accident occurred. He was traveling south on Route 220.
Electrical power in the area of the accident was disrupted while Central Maine Power completed necessary repairs. A portion of Route 220 near the accident scene was also closed for over two hours while deputies conducted their investigation.
Sheriff’s deputies were assisted in their investigation by Waldoboro police and emergency responders.
