BANGOR – Things grow “curiouser and curiouser” at the Penobscot Theatre, Bangor’s professional theatre company, as children attending this summer’s Youth Theater Camp stage “Alice In Wonderland” at Bangor’s historic Opera House.
“I’m thrilled with these kids,” says Joye Levy, director of education for Penobscot Theatre. “They are playing and working together very well and they’re building a wonderful show to share with our community.”
Penobscot Theatre’s Youth Theatre Camp performs “Alice in Wonderland” at 5 and 7 p.m. Friday, July 21. Tickets are $3 and may be purchased at the door, in advance by calling the box office at 942-3333, and at www.penobscottheatre.org.
Forty children, ranging in age from 7 to 12, attended the Penobscot Theatre’s two-week Youth Theatre Camp at the Bangor Opera House this summer, using theater games and improvisation to build an ensemble and grow into budding theater artists.
Among Penobscot Theatre’s caring and highly skilled teaching artists is AJ Mooney, who is directing “Alice” and guiding the young performers in a structured and supporting environment.
The kids divide into two casts as they stage the 45-minute performance of “Alice In Wonderland.” Five actors will portray the curious Alice in this inventive retelling of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale.
“I’m very pleased we could offer a full-day camp this year so our next generation of actors can thrive at Penobscot Theatre,” added Levy.
Penobscot Theatre will offer a Musical Theatre Workshop beginning Monday, July 24, ages 12-17. Some spots remain available for the 10 afternoon sessions.
Pupils will work to join the ensemble for Penobscot Theatre’s outdoor production of “Carousel” in Pickering Square in downtown Bangor Aug. 3-5.
