EAST MACHIAS – An East Machias man who went fishing at Holmes Bay ended up leaving the landing Saturday evening without his pickup truck that was stuck in the water.
A tow truck operator from Hilltop Auto Body Shop helped Joshua Wood, 24, retrieve his vehicle hours after he accidentally drove backward and ended up in 10 feet of water. It took more than two hours to get the truck back on land.
Maine State Police Trooper Miles Carpenter went to the incident scene near Route 191 around 6 p.m. It occurred on private property off Simpson’s Wharf Road.
“He ended up with one rear tire over the embankment, and then the other rear tire slipped over,” Carpenter said. “Between spinning and trying his clutch, the vehicle ended up in about 10 feet of water.
“He got out onto the hood. He didn’t mean to get in the water, but the situation just quickly declined. It was an unfortunate thing where he just wanted to go fishing, nothing more.”
Wood was taken to Down East Community Hospital for exposure to the cold water, but that was the extent of his minor injuries, Carpenter said.
He added that no charges will be filed in the incident.
