BANGOR – Saturday’s abbreviated schedule at the American Legion Zone 1 baseball tournament symbolized the control Mother Nature had on all things outdoors for much of the weekend.

One final came in a game that was suspended five minutes after midnight the previous evening, not the result of rain but because of fog that left outfielders invisible from the Mansfield Stadium stands and the ball a hypothetical object to many of those trying to locate it amid the low-flying clouds.

When the air cleared the next morning, No. 4 Waldo held on for a 2-1 opening-round victory over No. 3 Trenton.

One game was played as scheduled, a high-scoring affair that lasted more than three hours before No. 6 Presque Isle – which led early by as much as 13-1 – held on to outlast No. 5 Penquis 15-13 in the tournament’s first elimination game, with the Navigators having the tying run at first base in the bottom of the ninth.

One other game was started, with top-ranked Brewer scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning en route to a 3-1 lead over Trenton before that game – and the rest of the day’s schedule – was halted by rain in the sixth inning.

Waldo 2, Trenton 1

The Wildcats scored single runs in the first and fourth innings, and pitchers Tyler Miles and Nate Adams made them stand up by scattering eight hits.

Miles Davee and Noah Burke each singled in the first before Davee scored on Josh Nickerson’s sacrifice fly. John Weymouth walked, advanced on a Ryan Shute single and scored on an error in the fourth to give Waldo a 2-0 lead.

Trenton scored its only run in the sixth. Lucas Marks drew a one-out walk, was sacrificed to second by Sam Merrill and stole third before scoring on a single by Cory Smith.

The game was suspended in the bottom of the seventh with Trenton threatening, but when play was resumed Adams pitched out of the jam and went on to earn the save.

Blake Wessel tripled and singled twice for Trenton, while Phineas Peake singled twice.

Presque Isle 15, Trenton 13

The Patriots took control with 10 runs in the top of the third, then survived a furious Penquis comeback by scoring twice in the top of the ninth to break a 13-13 tie and then escaping a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the inning.

Michael Cleary had five hits for Presque Isle, a double and four singles, while Pat Thibodeau had four singles, two RBIs and three runs scored. Hunter Caron tripled, doubled and singled with two RBIs and three runs, while Harry Austin had two singles and three RBIs and Matt McGlinn singled twice and scored three runs.

Dan Beatham had three singles for Penquis, while Eric Day had two singles and three RBIs, Mark Pullen singled twice and scored three runs, Danny Kane scored four runs, Tim McCarthy hit a two-run double and Josh Pelletier doubled and drove home two runs.
