Orrington trips Saco for state title Cox pitches one-hitter, strikes out 15, lifts 11-12 All-Stars into regionals

ELLSWORTH – Emily Cox tossed a one-hitter, striking out 15 to lead the Orrington 11-12 All-Stars to the state softball championship with a 6-3 victory over Saco Tuesday.

Cox doubled twice and singled and Natasha Smith added a two-run double. Nicole Murphy chipped in a single for the winners.

Vanessa McCrum smacked an RBI double for Saco.

Junior League

Old Town finishes second

At Saco, Old Town eliminated Bath 7-5 to advance to the championship round but was beaten by South Portland 9-8 in eight innings on Monday in the state final.

Kaitlyn Morton drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth to give South Portland the victory. Danielle Dibiase doubled and singled for the winners and Tasia Gorham singled twice.

Catelyn Ouellette paced Old Town with a double and two singles while Hannah Morin, Amy Cossar and Amy Singer each added a double and single. Whitney Leland contributed three singles and Julie Guay and Whitney Buck had two singles apiece.

In Monday’s first game, Cossar paced Old Town with three singles and Singer added two doubles. Buck, Morin and Rachel Goodwin each chipped in with two singles and Leland doubled.

Leland also recorded Old Town’s only hit, a single, in its 6-0 loss to South Portland on Sunday.

At Bucksport Monday night, Chase Bickford capped a four-run outburst in the top of the fourth by scoring what would be the winning run from third on a passed ball with two outs as Ellsworth held off Bucksport for the District 1 Junior League title.

Brad Fulmer had a triple and a single and tallied two RBI for Ellsworth. Andrew Hodge struck out seven in five innings to get the win. Hodge and Seth Cote each notched an RBI apiece.

Cody Farrell, Tyler French, and Mike Bridges each had two hits for Bucksport.

At Holden, Ian Burgess doubled and singled, and Chris Coleman chipped in a double as Waldo held off Holbrook for the victory.

Andrew Gibbs hit two singles and Lukas Lockhart doubled for Holbrook.
