BANGOR – A Bangor man charged with robbing a Garland Street convenience store on Wednesday night has been released from Penobscot County Jail on $200 bail.
Robert McGonagle, 22, is scheduled to appear on Sept. 15 in Penobscot County Superior Court. If he is indicted before then by the Penobscot County grand jury, that hearing won’t be held.
McGonagle is charged with robbery, theft and resisting arrest. He could face additional charges, Jim Diehl, assistant district attorney for Penobscot County, said after the court hearing.
McGonagle was arrested about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday after he allegedly stole two beers two hours earlier from the store and shoved the clerk when she blocked the doorway to the Eastside Market. The clerk told Bangor police that she recognized McGonagle as the man who had taken beer and a magazine from the store without paying for it on July 14, according to the police report.
McGonagle allegedly returned to the store about 8:20 p.m. Wednesday. The clerk asked a customer to hold the door to keep him from entering and a male employee to stall the suspect outside while she called police. After a few minutes, McGonagle ran, according to the police report.
The male employee called for help as he chased the suspect. A second man grabbed McGonagle’s book bag, according to police, and the two fell to the sidewalk.
The first man caught up with McGonagle and sat on him until officers arrived, according to police. McGonagle refused to put his hands behind is back and allegedly struggled with officers when they arrived at the jail.
The man who fell with McGonagle broke his collarbone, Bangor police Officer Rob Angelo said Thursday.
