English actress Lisa Hammond, who recently starred in the PBS production of Charles Dickens’ “Bleak House,” will portray “The Little Locksmith” author Katharine Butler Hathaway in a one-woman play Aug. 4-6 on Vinalhaven and Aug. 9-10 in Castine. The play is based on Butler’s 1943 memoir about her early life spent bedridden with spinal tuberculosis at the turn of the 20th century.

Butler was disfigured by her disease. In fact, she resembled a local who was a hunchback and whose contorted predicament was her greatest fear. She lived in Castine for a number of years.

Hammond has appeared in numerous stage plays and television programs in her native country and abroad. Her costume was designed by two-time Tony Award winner Willa Kim, and was made by Sally Robbins of North Haven.

The “The Little Locksmith” was adapted for stage by Susan Minor and John Wulp, and will be directed by Henry Wishcamper of New York City. Wishcamper, a former resident of Freeport, is perhaps best known for his recent highly acclaimed production of Thornton Wilder’s “Pullman Car Hiawatha.”

Hammond’s performances on Vinalhaven will be at the Arts and Recreation Center on High Street. The Aug. 4 production is a fundraiser for the center, and tickets cost $35. On Aug. 5 and 6, tickets will be $12. In Castine, performances will be at Delano Hall, and tickets cost $20. All performances starts at 7:30 p.m. For information, call 863-4631.
