BELFAST – A Belmont man was flown Tuesday to a Bangor hospital with multiple injuries after his motorcycle was hit head-on by a sport utility vehicle.
Travis York, 25, suffered facial and head injuries, a broken leg and arm in the accident. He was not wearing a crash helmet.
York was traveling on Lincolnville Avenue (Route 52) in the direction of the Waldo County YMCA just before 3:20 p.m. on a 2005 Kawasaki when a 2005 Ford Explorer driven by Susan Feix, 49, of South China headed in the opposite direction turned into his lane of travel. Feix was making a left turn into the Bank of America complex.
Jeff Emerson, of Swanville, who witnessed the crash, said York hit the hood of the SUV, then was catapulted into the air before landing on the pavement.
Investigating Officer Eric Kelly of the Belfast Police Department was patrolling the same highway and came upon the accident seconds after it happened. Kelly initially thought Feix’s vehicle had hit a pedestrian, then noticed the motorcycle wedged under the SUV’s front end.
York was taken to Waldo County General Hospital by Belfast Ambulance, then transferred by LifeFlight to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Feix, whose SUV’s air bag deployed, was checked at the Belfast hospital but was not injured in the crash.
Kelly said the lack of skid marks and witness reports indicated that both vehicles were traveling at a slow rate of speed.
“She said she didn’t see him,” Kelly said. “He could do nothing. She just did not see him.”
