University of Maine men’s soccer coach Travers Evans has named his captains for the upcoming season.

Evans announced Tuesday that seniors Jason Jacobe of Windham and Cooper Friend of Ellsworth will share captain duties for the Black Bears this fall.

“I am delighted to have Jason and Cooper serve as captains for the 2006 season,” Evans said in a press release. “Both are fifth-year seniors who know how to do things the right way. We have a very talented group of young men this year, and I believe the leadership of those two captains will help us achieve our goals as a program.”

Friend, a three-year starting midfielder, has played in 52 career games, recording one goal and seven assists. After missing most of the 2004 season due to injury, he was named to the America East second team last season, and has also been named to the America East Academic Honor Roll and is a UMaine scholar-athlete.

Jacobe, a back, has also been a three-year starter. He scored one goal and had two assists last year. A standout in the classroom, Jacobe was a recipient of the 2005-06 M Club Dean Smith Award, presented yearly to the top male scholar-athlete at UMaine. He also has been a two-time selection of the ESPN the Magazine CoSIDA Academic All-District Team, along with the America East Commissioners Honor Roll and a UMaine scholar-athlete.

The men’s soccer program’s second annual golf outing is Monday at the Bar Harbor Golf Course in Trenton. Registration begins at noon with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Cost is $75 per player and includes golf and cart, prizes, refreshments and a buffet dinner. Those seeking more information may contact assistant coach Dan Balaguero at 581-4766 or Daniel.Balaguero@umit.maine.edu to reserve a spot.

The Black Bears will open their season at UMass on Aug. 25 and the home opener is Aug. 29 against Northeastern.

Bundy named UM assistant

Karly Bundy has been hired as an assistant field hockey coach at UMaine, interim head coach Andrea Thebarge announced Tuesday.

Bundy, a four-year letterwinner at UMaine (2000-03) and two-year captain, scored 17 goals and recorded 10 assists in 77 games for the Black Bears.

“I’m excited to have Karly join our coaching staff,” Thebarge said. “She is a tremendous player and role model with great knowledge and experience. She will be a great addition to our program.”

Bundy, a 2004 UMaine graduate with a degree in kinesiology and physical education, is a certified personal trainer and has created and implemented individual programs for nutrition counseling and exercise.

Bundy’s previous coaching experience includes serving as an assistant at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., during the 2004 season, as well as a second assistant coach at Maine from January to May 2004.

Bates hires McCollum

Mike McCollum has been hired as the interim head swimming coach at Bates College in Lewiston.

McCollum, who had been an assistant under Dana Mullholland, takes over for Mullholland, who retired from coaching after 18 years at Bates and currently serves as interim athletic director at the school.

McCollum was an eight-time NCAA Div. III All-American and 10-time NESCAC champion at Middlebury College.

Prior to coaching at Bates, McCollum served as head coach at Hamilton (Ohio) High School and SUNY Fredonia as well as assistant coaching jobs at Norwich University and William and Mary.
