ELLSWORTH – Some parents were alarmed when a stranger started taking photos of children playing at a local swimming hole. It turns out the man was a sex offender from Indiana, and he’s now facing new charges in Maine.

Police were given the man’s license plate number after he was seen taking pictures of kids on the sandy beach on Branch Lake in Ellsworth.

Officers discovered the man, Jerry Moon, 41, of Martinsville, Ind., is a registered sex offender in that state.

He was arrested last weekend for failing to register as a sex offender in Maine after having been in the state for three weeks. Maine law requires sex offenders to register with the state if they stay for more than 14 days in the state.

Moon, who was arrested in Indiana in 2002 and again in 2003 on sex-related charges, is free on bail. He’s scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 19.
