Van Buren man apprehended in vehicle theft

HOULTON – A Van Buren man who apparently got tired of walking home after he was released from jail was arrested again on Monday evening after allegedly stealing a vehicle from a local motel.

Maine State Police Sgt. David McPherson said that Luc Gagnon, 18, was arrested a few hours after the 5:30 p.m. incident.

Police said that Gagnon was seeking a ride back to Van Buren after his release from Aroostook County Jail. Gagnon had recently been incarcerated on a charge of violating conditions of release.

He reportedly happened upon the 1988 Ford Ranger truck at the Star Dust Motel on North Road.

The key to the vehicle was inside, and investigators said that Gagnon stole the truck and headed toward Van Buren.

State police Sgt. Tom Pelletier said Tuesday that Gagnon saw a U.S. Border Patrol agent as he was driving through Bridgewater. He told police that he became frightened and abandoned the truck.

He fled into the woods but was soon apprehended and taken back to jail.
