There is more than meets the eye for those taking part in Alumni Weekend at Foxcroft Academy in Dover-Foxcroft, reports Cathy Hall.

Hall wrote that FA is hosting Foxcroft Academy’s first auction at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, at the academy, which, by the way, I believe is one of the loveliest settings of any Maine school.

The auction, Hall wrote, follows “the traditional lawn party featuring the popular alumni dance band,” during what should be a most enjoyable summer evening for all who attend.

A committee of parents and staff have worked hard to bring you many desirable items and services to bid on, including a weekend for two at the Bar Harbor Inn, gourmet catered dinners, a sunset cruise, original artwork, jewelry, golf packages, a Foxcroft Fan Pack and much more.

Local chefs will be offering a delicious dessert buffet, which you can visit as often as you like.

The guest auctioneer is Tom Lizotte, and members of the Foxcroft Academy community will provide the background music.

One great way to beat the heat this week would be to take part, either as a swimmer, kayak escort or vocal supporter for the 6th Beach to Beach Swim for Breast Cancer from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, at Jenkins Beach on Green Lake in Dedham.

The event, sponsored by the Bangor Y, Sandollar Spa & Pool and Eastern Maine Medical Center, raises funds to help support Caring Connections and Encore Plus Breast Cancer Support Groups throughout Maine.

Participants can swim any distance, up to two miles, and enter as an individual or form a team of up to six people, collecting pledges and donations until the day of the event.

The goal for this year is to raise $15,000. The registration fee is $15 and all swimmers receive a T-shirt.

Swimmers, kayakers and folks to watch the fun are welcome, and all regular beach fees collected that day will be donated to Caring Connections, a cooperative program of EMMC and the Bangor Y funded through philanthropic dollars raised by Eastern Maine Charities.

For more information or to volunteer for the Beach to Beach Swim for Breast Cancer, call Robin Long or Ro Legasse at the Bangor Y, 941-2808.

Here is a reminder from executive director Dale Marie Clark that the Swing for Hope and Hospice Golf Tournament begins with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 7, at Natanis Golf Course on Webber Pond Road in Vassalboro.

The registration fee is $65 for the team scramble that benefits Hope’s Place, a program of Hospice Volunteers of Waterville Area for grieving children, teens and their parents or guardians.

To register, call 873-3651, e-mail hospiceinfo@hvwa.org, or visit http://www.hvwa.org/

Recently, our community lost three women I knew, and I extend my belated but most sincere sympathies to their families and friends.

Corinne Sargent was 82 when she died on July 9. I remember her as one I would describe as an “intergenerational gal” who made friends and acquaintances of everyone she met, regardless of age or gender. She moved through circles comfortably, and those who knew her felt that comfort in her presence.

Mittie Stevens, a teacher whose greatest pride was her family and their many accomplishments, was 88 when she died July 10. What I remember best about her was how she’d grin from ear-to-ear whenever you brought up the subject of her children or grandchildren, whether they were within hearing distance or not, she loved them so.

I was very saddened to read that 53-year-old Betsy Economy Preble died July 21. Many remember Betsy and that beautiful, welcoming smile of hers from days gone by when she worked with her late parents at the old Checkmate Restaurant in Bangor. She was a lovely, thoughtful woman who had much to give, and it was appreciated.
