President Mary Clift and members of the St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary are undertaking a new fundraiser, and you can be part of it and help make it a success.

SJH Auxiliary members invite you to join them on the coach trip, “A Journey Home, John F. Kennedy and Ireland,” to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston.

The bus departs at 7 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, from the Park & Ride Lot at the corner of Interstate 395 and Odlin Road in Bangor, and returns at approximately 11 p.m. to that location.

The cost is $109 per person, and the reservation deadline is Monday, Aug. 21.

Boarding along I-95 south of Bangor can be made by prior arrangement.

The price includes travel, museum admission, a traditional Irish dinner at the Wenham Tea House and, for those who are not SJHA members, a special, one-year membership.

A coffee stop in Augusta and lunch and shopping in Boston’s Quincy Market is at your own expense.

The exhibit offers “a display of never-before seen gifts from the people of Ireland,” Clift wrote, “plus the museum’s 25 multi-media exhibits and period settings from the White House.”

The fundraiser is being organized by veteran trip coordinator Nancy Ziegenbein of Bangor, who is very excited about not only the Kennedy exhibit, but the meal at the Wenham Tea House.

Ziegenbein told me that staff at Wenham Tea House not only agreed to open for the travelers, but also agreed to prepare a traditional Irish dinner to go along with the theme of this particular exhibit.

Reservations can be made by sending a check or credit card information to Ziegenbein, 41 Linden St., Bangor 04401.

For more information, call her at 947-7965, or call the SJH Public Affairs office at 262-1211.

Clift wrote that all proceeds will benefit the Nurses Call System at St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor.

Debbi Melnikas, assistant director of the American Folk Festival on the Bangor Waterfront, e-mailed that “Bangor’s OWN Festival needs you!”

Melnikas wants readers to know “anyone who is interested in volunteering for the Festival is invited to attend a Volunteer Orientation Session, anytime between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at the Richard E. Dyke Center for Family Business” on the campus of Husson College in Bangor.

If you need directions to that site, or more information, call 992-2630.

Remember, the success of the festival depends on community support.

I was happy to learn from Mark Parent that the 17th Annual WLBZ-2 Sidewalk Art Festival is anticipating the participation of more than 100 artists, so it should be quite an event.

The WLBZ-2 Sidewalk Art Festival is 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, in downtown Bangor.

The festival takes place along Broad Street, in West Market Square, Pickering Square and the pedestrian walkway over Kenduskeag Stream.

For your travel-planning purposes, you should know that the festival streets and areas will be closed to vehicular traffic.

Parent reports “thousands of works” will be on sale “at every price,” and that will include original works and prints as well as crafts, jewelry and ceramics.

This professionally judged show offers four cash prizes and is sponsored by Open MRI of Maine.

For readers unfamiliar with the term, MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging.

Ken Crump, president of Mountain Man Landscape Design, and Larry Castoro, vice president of Granville Stone, have announced their offer of a gift certificate for work around the home of an individual or family who “deserves a helping hand” is being continued through September.

The partners choose one winner at the end of the month. Qualifying individuals include single mothers, the elderly and “good people with little money” or those who are facing “hard times,” Crump explained.

To nominate someone for this gift, e-mail MountainManCorp@netscape.net or call 356-6994.
