SOUTH PORTLAND -The Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall will be on display at Southern Maine Community College Aug. 11-13 at Spring Point Light Shoreway on the SMCC campus.
“The Wall” is a traveling, three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. It is dedicated to all Americans who served in Vietnam and honors all veterans of the U.S. military.
It will be brought in by motorcycle escort at 1 p.m. Aug. 8 and setup will begin that evening. The opening ceremony will be held at 12:45 p.m. Aug. 11 and will include a flyover of VP26 and a welcome address by Gov. John Baldacci.
A ceremony of remembrance will be held at 1 p.m. Aug. 12, and a candlelight ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. that evening.
The closing ceremony of “The Wall” will take place at 1 p.m. Aug. 13, and there will be a dedication and memorial ceremony held at 11 a.m. Aug. 14 at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland. A monument and time capsule containing tributes left at “The Wall” will be dedicated at this ceremony.
