Letter

Alcoholism is a disease

In regard to Stephen Cox’s July 27 letter stating that alcoholism is not a disease. Those who suffer from alcoholism can certainly tell you it is a disease, a progressive disease.

Cox says it’s preposterous that one can get the disease by drinking a bottle of brew. Yes, it is. If that were the case then every person in this world who has one drink or one bottle of brew would be an alcoholic. Obviously not the case.

If you were to speak to a dozen doctors and a dozen psychiatrists, they would all tell you how wrong Cox is. They would tell you that alcoholism is most certainly a disease. Sometimes it is a controllable disease and other times it is an uncontrollable disease. Either way, it’s a serious disease.

I pray Cox never has to watch a beloved family member or a friend slowly and painfully die from this disease called alcoholism.

The only part of the letter that is true is about Alcoholics Anonymous being a good organization that helps keep people sober and able to live normal lives. Actually, that part isn’t true either. It’s a great organization as well as a lifesaving program.
