New Jersey 11, Coastal 1

At West Deptford, N.J., the Coastal All-Stars of Blue Hill face an elimination game Monday at the 2006 Senior League Baseball Eastern Regional after suffering an 11-1 loss to Bloomfield, N.J., in their tournament opener at Union Field.

Coastal, 0-1 in the regional, will face Auburn, Mass., at 10 a.m. Monday. Auburn is 1-1, rebounding from a 16-0 loss to Camden-Wyoming, Del., on Friday to defeat Bridgeport, Conn., 8-3 in an elimination game Sunday.

New Jersey champion Bloomfield struck for a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third against Coastal, which got a run back in the top of the fourth. Casey Hull singled, stole second base, and moved to third on a groundout by Nick Saunders. Hull then scored on a grounder by Robert Brown, as he was running on contact and scored when the Bloomfield catcher could not hold onto the ball to make the tag.

Coastal starter Caleb Hale escaped a second-and-third threat in the bottom of the inning, but Bloomfield sent 13 batters to the plate to score seven runs to break the game open.

The New Jersey champs added two more runs in the sixth, and the game ended under the 10-run rule.

Michael Chiaravalloti paced New Jersey with a double, two singles and two RBI.

Collin Ciomei had Coastal’s only other hit off Bloomfield’s Eric Szuhany, a sixth-inning single. Szuhany allowed no earned runs while walking two and striking out six in a complete-game effort.

Hale worked into the fifth for Coastal, allowing nine hits and seven runs, but only four earned runs for Coastal. Hull relieved Hale and pitched the rest of the way.

The New Jersey champions now have a 24-game winning streak in Eastern Regional tournament play at West Deptford dating to 2001, with teams from South Vineland, Freehold Township and Bloomfield represented.
