Senior Little League World Series seeks vocalists

Any major event hosted in our city needs the support of the community and, really, everyone in Eastern Maine to succeed, and the Senior Little League World Series is no exception.

Writing on behalf of event organizers, Cary Weston reports two developments through which you can participate to help us properly host those taking part in this special summer event.

The first development involves SLL World Series organizers. While they are “talking with some talented groups and soloists,” according to marketing coordinator Dave Mansfield, they are still seeking vocalists to sing the national anthem during many of the games that are scheduled for Aug. 12-19 at Mansfield Sports Complex on Thirteenth Street in Bangor.

If you would like to have the honor of singing the national anthem during this event, call Sutherland Weston Marketing Communications at 945-9999.

Second, Weston has announced that SLL World Series organizers have launched an eBay auction to benefit the games, highlighted by five autographed Stephen King books, including “The Dark Half” and “On Writing,” along with a first-edition, autographed copy of Tabitha King’s “Candles Burning.”

The auction closes at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9.

You can link to the auction by visiting www.mansfieldstadium.com.

This is the fifth consecutive year Bangor has hosted the event featuring five regional teams from the United States, teams from Canada, Latin America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and host Bangor, the Maine District 3 champion.

The public is invited to attend a program on managing invasive land plants at 10:30 a.m. today at Johnson’s Red Barn in Forest City.

Sponsored by University of Maine Cooperative Extension, ornamental horticultural specialist Lois Stack is the featured speaker.

The program includes a slide show and handouts to help identify and control invasive species in the area.

Coffee, cold drinks and sweets will be provided, and you should bring your lunch and enjoy visiting gardens in the area following the program. For information, call 448-2835.

A spaghetti supper to benefit the family of Greg and Kelly Thibodeau is 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Old Town.

The cost is $5 per person for the supper, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, and all proceeds benefit the family.

The Thibodeaus’ son, 1-year-old Dylan Thibodeau, was recently diagnosed with kidney cancer.

The highly successful American Cancer Society Old Town Relay for Life Team, MJ’s Caps Connection, will host a benefit golf tournament.

The Relay for Life tournament is an 18-hole, best-ball scramble with tee times at 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 12, at Pine Hill Golf Course in Brewer.

The $45 registration fee for each member of the three-person team includes greens fees, a barbecue and gross and net prizes in a men’s and ladies’ division.

The event is in memory of sisters Mary Jo Sekera and Jackie Doughty, and proceeds benefit the cancer society.

During the past three years, MJ’s Caps Connection has raised some $55,000 for the ACS Relay for Life to benefit cancer research and programs in Maine.

For information or to register, call Sandra Meehan at 989-2108.

Jennifer Brooks of Penquis Community Action Program wants readers to know that, during August, Penquis CAP will distribute free school supplies for children attending schools throughout Penobscot, Piscataquis and Knox counties.

All parents or guardians need to do is call the local Penquis CAP office to register.

You should be prepared to provide the child’s name, age, grade and school as well as your name and contact information.

School supplies will be distributed on a first-call basis until all supplies are gone.

The Penquis CAP Bangor-area numbers are 973-3500 or (800) 215-4942.

The number to call for the Dover-Foxcroft area is 564-7116; for the Lincoln area, 794-3093; and for the Rockland area, 596-0361 or (800) 585-1605.

Wayne and Collette Young wrote “to thank everyone who attended the benefit supper held on our behalf” July 22 at Dixmont Snowmobile Club.

Wayne Young, a lifelong Newburgh resident, popular local businessman and active community volunteer, has cancer.

“We would, especially, like to thank all the volunteers who helped organize, advertise, acquire donations, prepare and serve food, set-up, clean up and greet the people,” the couple wrote.

“The donations we received are greatly appreciated. We are thankful for such supportive family, friends and neighbors.”
