HERMON – It had been a frustrating three weeks for Hermon’s Kris Watson.

But that frustration turned into elation Saturday night.

Watson took the lead from John Kalel II of Orrington on the first lap and was strong on restarts following three cautions to take the checkered flag in the 50-lap Super Street series race at Speedway 95.

It was the final race in the three-race series and Kalel’s second-place finish was good enough to give him the series points championship.

Watson drove his 1979 Chevy Camaro to a 10 car-length victory over Kalel. Van Kitchin of St. Albans finished third and rounding out the top five in the 12-car field were Franklin’s Greg Pung and Hermon’s Jeff Overlock Jr.

“The car was super all day,” said the 26-year-old Watson. “The crew worked on it all week long. We’ve had so many problems the last three weeks. We lost probably three transmissions and broke a clutch. It has been rough.

“It was nice to have the car in one piece when we were done,” added Watson, whose win was his third of the season.

“Every four to five weeks, the car comes to life. The rest of the time it’s in the back,” added Watson.

Kalel said his ’81 Camaro Z-28 was “decent. It wasn’t bad.

“We had enough to stay with Kris but not enough to get by him,” said the 19-year-old Kalel. “I tried awful hard [on the re-starts]. But he had the outside groove and I got the inside groove and it’s hard to get out of the corner on the restarts on the inside.”

Watson said one thing that helped him on the restarts was the car stayed glued to the track.

“The tires were real sticky. They held a lot of grip. The car took right off,” said Watson.

Kitchin was locked in a good battle for third that was complicated by the lapped car of Michael Overlock.

“He got in between us and we had to battle him but we finally got by him. My car was a little loose but we could handle it,” said Kitchin.

“This is my first time in the top three this year,” added Kitchin.

In the Pro Stock feature, Hermon’s Scott Modery and Stockton Springs’ Duane Seekins put on a scintillating show as they passed each other for the lead at various stages of the 35-lapper.

Modery gave Seekins a little tap on lap 28 and then slid by on the inside to take the checkered flag.

Town Hill’s John Phippen Jr. slipped past Seekins moments later and finished second.

Seekins was third with Little Deer Isle’s Matt Eaton and Presque Isle’s Chris Pangburn completing the top five in the 13-car field.

“He got into me a little bit and loosened me up,” said Seekins. “It forced me up the track and throws your concentration all off.

“This was my first top three all year so I’m pretty happy,” added Seekins.

Modery said, “Duane told me he had five races on his left-side tires. His car was going away and I was getting closer and closer.

“The only way to pass anybody on this track is to give him a little bump and slow him up just a little bit so you can get by him. I had to do it or I would have gotten it done to me,” added Modery who pulled away once he got the lead.

“He had old tires and I had new tires. That was the difference,” said Modery, who won by 15 car-lengths.

In the Sport Four division, Hermon’s Mike Hopkins moved from 10th to second in five laps and then blew by Oakland’s Reggie Bickford on a lap five restart and cruised to a 16 car-length triumph.

Justin Trombley of Winter Harbor finished second with Bickford, Medford’s Adam Russell and Belfast’s Spencer Garvin rounding out the top five. Thirteen cars started the race.

In the Strictly Street feature, brothers Jordan and Derek Pearson of Glenburn started on the front row and that is exactly where they finished.

Jordan Pearson finished two car-lengths ahead of his older brother. Hermon’s Shawn Sperrey was third, Rowland Robinson Jr. of Steuben was fourth and Corinna’s Sam Whitmore was fifth.

In the Limited Sportsman feature, Fred Brown of Winterport powered past Glenburn’s Joe Allard on the inside of turn two on lap 20 and pulled away to a six car-length triumph.

Allard was second, followed by Rowland Robinson Sr. of Steuben, Phil Richardson of Hermon and Paul White of Corinna.

Nine cars took the green flag.
