An argument between a Bangor couple escalated Tuesday night, when Adrian Baines, 21, allegedly assaulted his girlfriend at their Birch Street apartment.
The woman told Bangor police that around 8:30 p.m., the argument over a cell phone intensified into a fight punctuated by pushing and headlocks. Police said the woman suffered a black eye and a cut on her nose.
After a witness broke the pair apart, Baines left the apartment on foot.
An hour later, Baines returned to the apartment, and the witness alerted police.
Baines denied hitting anyone and claimed his girlfriend bit him.
Officers arrested Baines and charged him with one count of domestic assault and one count of simple assault, and took him to Penobscot County Jail.

Bangor police arrested a 21-year-old man early Wednesday morning after he allegedly assaulted a neighbor during a fight.
When police arrived the fight had already ended, but a 19-year-old Bangor man reported he was hit in the head with a metal object by Jonathan Mejia of Bangor.
Officers noted the teenager’s forehead was red and swollen. He was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center with blurred vision, a complaint of pain and dizziness.
Mejia supposedly confused the man’s identity with someone else who owed Mejia money, the 19-year-old told police.
Bangor officers arrested Mejia around 3 a.m. Wednesday and charged him with assault and violation of bail. He was taken to Penobscot County Jail. Police said Mejia was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

A Brewer woman was listed in fair condition Wednesday after she crashed her 1990 Buick into a guardrail Tuesday afternoon on the Joshua Chamberlain Bridge.
Police said Mary Dade, 58, was heading to Brewer when she lost control of her car and struck the barrier on the right side of the bridge that connects Union Street in Bangor with Wilson Street in Brewer.
Officer Paul Colley reported that Dade “appeared to have suffered a medical problem before the accident” and blamed the crash on a “physical impairment.”
The report said Wade broke leg bones.
Wade was wearing a seat belt, according to the report.
No other vehicles were involved in the 3:30 p.m. accident.
