Camp offers sports for disabled veterans

Veterans with physical disabilities are invited to take part in Maine Handicapped Skiing’s second annual summer Veterans/No Boundaries program Friday through Sunday, Sept. 8-10. The program is located at Pine Tree Camp, a fully accessible outdoor camp, in Rome.

The summer program offers free lessons in cycling, canoeing, kayaking, cycling, martial arts and fishing. Veterans and their significant others stay in rustic camp cabins with meals, sports activities and equipment provided by Maine Handicapped Skiing. Veterans are asked to provide their own transportation to the camp.

September’s program is the third Veterans/No Boundaries session offered by Maine Handicapped Skiing, Maine’s largest year-round adaptive recreation program serving adults and children with physical disabilities.

The newest addition to Maine Handicapped Skiing’s nationally recognized adaptive recreational programs, Veterans/No Boundaries provides recreational activities to any veteran with a physical disability who requires adaptive equipment or techniques to participate in sports.

Maine Handicapped Skiing’s goal, through Veterans/No Boundaries, is to help any veteran with a physical disability to integrate back into his or her community with new self-confidence, physical strength and skills through participation in adaptive recreational activities.

The goal of Maine Handicapped Skiing is to introduce adaptive sports to disabled veterans and active duty military personnel from the most recent worldwide conflicts who have recently completed rehabilitation and are eager to participate in summer and winter adaptive sports.

The Veterans/No Boundaries program is supported by western Maine businesses, individuals and many American Legion Posts throughout Maine. Veterans/No Boundaries is coordinated by a volunteer planning committee that includes veterans, local businesspeople and Maine Handicapped Skiing staff. Several veterans on the committee are currently participants and volunteers at Maine Handicapped Skiing in winter and summer sports activities.
