In trying to pass legislation prohibiting cohabitation of sex offenders, I believe our thinking is in error. First, well-intentioned as it may be, I think it probably is unconstitutional.
As for the Bangor Rescue Mission in Hampden where three offenders are now living, it seems its residents are receiving supervision, counseling and spiritual formation. What could be better?
As Alcoholics Anonymous – which is a spiritual, not religious program – has helped many an alcoholic to attain and maintain sobriety, I think this model should be replicated. There are very few supports in this society for sex offenders attempting to live a life of rehabilitation.
Perhaps the Legislature could appropriate monies to afford services while people are in jails or prisons and hook them up with social services before they are released.
Perhaps our newspapers could help us by listing all services available to sex offenders wishing not to re-offend. Believe me, they are out there.
