BANGOR – Two former University of Maine football players were indicted earlier this week by the Penobscot County grand jury.

Anthony A. Hicks, 20, and Garland Webb, 21, both of Old Town, were indicted Monday on charges of burglary and theft.

They are scheduled to be arraigned in Penobscot County Superior Court on Aug. 31.

The pair allegedly broke into the Orono apartment of a friend on July 21 and stole stereo equipment and other personal items that belonged to the friend’s roommate, Michael Roberts, the deputy district attorney for Penobscot County, said Wednesday.

The men were seen in the building by a maintenance worker, Roberts said.

If convicted, they face up to 10 years in prison on the burglary charge alone.

Hicks, a native of Newark, N.J., is a student at the University of Maine. He was a member of the Black Bears football team for three seasons but is no longer on the team, Joe Carr, spokesman for the university, said Wednesday.

Hicks was dismissed from the football team earlier this summer for violating the UMaine Student-Athlete Code of Conduct, according to Carr. Hicks is enrolled in fall semester classes set to begin next month.

After redshirting in 2003, Hicks saw action in 21 games during his freshman and sophomore seasons. He played in 10 games last fall as a backup linebacker and special teams player, registering 25 tackles.

Webb, a Boston native, was enrolled at the university last year and was on the team for the 2004 season. He did not appear in any games.

Webb is not signed up for fall classes, according to Carr.
