Two assaults reported on same Bangor street

A Bangor man covering his right eye and bleeding profusely told police early Thursday morning that he was attacked by four or five men.

They didn’t take his money, just punched him in the face as he sat outside a Second Street residence about 12:30 a.m. Thursday, the 32-year-old man told Bangor police Officer Kerry Libby.

The Bangor man lives nearby but didn’t know his assailants, whom he described as Hispanic. He told Libby he had seen them daily, in a small group walking up and down Second Street.

The Police Department has investigated other violent incidents on that street. One day earlier, on Wednesday, police arrested Jonathan Mejia, 21, of Bangor for allegedly hitting another man in the head with a metal object.

While being detained in the J.C. Penney store at the Bangor Mall on Wednesday afternoon, a Milford man suspected of shoplifting reportedly used a cell phone to call someone and tell all.

During the phone call, Charles C. Howard, 36, described how a friend had told him how to remove store security tags, according to Bangor police Officer James Hassard, who was within earshot of the conversation.

Howard, who allegedly had left the store without paying for two pairs of shorts and a T-shirt worth a total of $114, also told the person on the other end of the phone that he was hoping he would be summoned. That was not to be. Hassard determined that Howard already was out on bail on a different charge and arrested him on charges of theft and violation of bail conditions.

Employees at Deb’s store at Bangor Mall reported Wednesday that a customer put some clothing in a stroller and, while paying for other items, left without paying for them all.

Confronted outside the store about the $212 in clothing she didn’t pay for, Rachel Sabattus, 20, of Robbinston handed over a pair of pants and a shirt and continued on, Bangor police Officer Chris Desmond was told. Mall security stopped her, and Sabattus returned to the store where she was charged with theft.
