With reference to Ted Bragdon’s letter, “Highway incompetence” (BDN, July 31), I can certainly relate to his problem [of a rebuilt road in front of his home in Bradford]. A few years ago the highway department rebuilt the road in Benedicta Township -partially, that is. A section of the road and ditches were done over with very large “catch basins” installed, a remarkable job as far as it goes.

However, they stopped in the middle of “town” and left very deep ditches in front of my house as well as my neighbors to the north and south of me. This section is a disgrace with standing water at all times because there is no way water can run off into culverts that are not nearly deep enough.

I have contacted a gentleman at the Caribou office and he said this engineering decision was made between Benedicta and the state. Since this is unorganized territory, who represents Benedicta? I have lived here all my “long” life and I have no say, it seems.

Oh, yes, he also said they ran out of money – the reason for not finishing the job. I’m sure the mosquitoes and flies appreciate the stagnated water, so convenient for breeding.

Whatever happened to the WPA? They were great!
