Shark fishing tournament set for South Portland

SOUTH PORTLAND – Anglers will have a chance to get an up-close look at a shark and compete for cash and prizes first Casco Bay Classic Shark Tournament, which will be held Sept. 8-9 at Spring Point Marina.

There will be a 6:30 a.m. shotgun start on Sept. 8 at the Portland Head Light.

The tournament, which will benefit the ALS Association Northern New England chapter, is a catch-and-release competition. Cash and prizes will be awarded to the anglers who bring in the largest sharks and a register of the most caught and released.

The Casco Bay Classic will be limited to the first 175 anglers who register. The cut off date is Aug. 26.

A $10,000 grand prize will be awarded to a registered boat that sets a new Maine state record in the rod and reel category for Mako, Porebeagle, Thresher or Blue Shark, which are considered some of the most aggressive sharks on the Atlantic seaboard.

A mandatory captains meeting and dinner will be held on Thursday, Sept. 7. For registration and sponsorship information go to cascobayclassic.org.

DIF&W sets Aug. 21 meeting

The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife has scheduled a public informational meeting Monday, Aug. 21 at 6:30 p.m. in Ashland.

Fisheries staff from Ashland and Augusta will be hosting the meeting at the Ashland Fish and Game Club located on the bank of the Aroostook River off the Portage Road.

Topics to be discussed include:

. Splake Sport Fisheries

. Big Reed Pond Fishery Management

. Lake Whitefish Restoration Program

Attendees will have opportunity to discuss other items of interest.
