Akron’s Smith shuts down Sea Dogs

PORTLAND – Sean Smith pitched eight shutout innings and Jared Sandberg drove in the only run of the game in the 10th inning as the Akron Aeros edged the Portland Sea Dogs 1-0 Sunday in the Eastern League.

Portland starter Frank Brooks pitched six no-hit innings and left the game after seven without giving up a run. Neither pitcher figured in the decision.

With two out in the top of the 10th, Pat Osborn drew a walk off Portland reliever Mike Bumatay (1-2), advanced to second on Edgar Martinez’s wild pitch and scampered home when Sandberg knocked a soft line drive single into center field.

Smith struck out eight, walked none and gave up two hits. Tony Sipp (4-2) picked up the win for Akron (74-46) with two innings of perfect relief.

The Sea Dogs (61-58) advanced runners to third base in the first and third innings but Smith came back with the big outs.
