Union woman on life support; boyfriend blames black Lab

UNION – A local woman is on life support in a Portland hospital after being discovered at home injured and unconscious Saturday afternoon.

Maine State Police Detective Dean Jackson said the 46-year-old woman, whom he declined to identify because the incident remains under investigation, was found unconscious at her Baker Road home around noon Saturday by her boyfriend.

The man told authorities he believed the head injury was caused by the woman’s dog jumping on her and knocking her down.

“We don’t really know what happened,” Jackson said Sunday. “We’re waiting until she recovers enough to be interviewed. She’s on life support right now. She is not doing very good.”

Jackson described the woman as slightly built and weighing about 90 pounds. He said family members reported that the woman’s large, black Labrador retriever “may have been too much for her to handle.”

Jackson said the woman’s boyfriend witnessed an incident Wednesday where the dog knocked the woman down. A family member said the dog had a habit of lunging after things when she took it for walks on a leash, often pulling her along with it.

Jackson said the ambulance call came in shortly after noon and that the woman was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland. He said the dog was still at home with the woman’s boyfriend.
