BANGOR – The coaches and players from Bloomfield, N.J., had seen this too many times already in the course of their playoff season to be fazed by it.
They were trailing in a tight game that was rapidly winding down to the final inning. Time for some more late heroics.
Pinch hitter Jason Chesterman, who was 0-for-3 in the game, was the latest guy to play hero for the East regional champs after coming to the plate with runners at second and third and one out in the top of the seventh.
With his team trailing 5-4, Chesterman flailed at the first pitch, but flared the second to shallow right to score the tying and winning runs on a warm and sunny Monday afternoon at Mansfield Stadium.
“Jay looked lousy on the first pitch, but he really came through on the next one,” said New Jersey manager Rob Chiaravalloti with a chuckle.
Bloomfield’s bats came up with two insurance runs, but it was insurance they wouldn’t have to claim as reliever Kevin Miller escaped a one-out jam with runners at the corners in the bottom of the inning and New Jersey posted an 8-5 Senior League World Series victory over Madison, Wis., the U.S. Central region champs.
The win makes Bloomfield 2-0 in Series pool play. Madison, which falls to 0-2, takes on Brussels, Belgium, today at 10 a.m. and New Jersey plays Southwest champ Tulsa, Okla., Wednesday at 10 a.m.
It’s a break Chiaravalloti is looking forward to.
“It’ll be good to have a day off,” he said. “We’ve never been here before so it’s kind of a learn-as-we-go thing. I think that’s what’s been the thing with us the first two days, with us playing sloppy. Being 2-0 right now after that, though, we’re in really good shape.”
So is New Jersey cleanup hitter Rich Monroig, who has become one of the top hitters in the tourney so far, going 6-for-8. Monday, he went 4-for-4 with a double, three singles, an RBI and a run scored.
“I tried to get ahead early in the count because we thought he had a nasty slider,” Monroig said. “I just wanted to get ahead and get a fastball. I think my second hit was on a slider, but the rest were fastballs.”
The only other multiple hitter for Bloomfield was first baseman Mike Chiaravalotti (two singles and an RBI).
“It’s just different guys getting clutch hits at the right time,” Monroig said. “We’ve been doing that all season, having a big inning at the end of the game where everyone puts the ball in play.”
Despite Madison losing the lead late and being 0-2, coach Mike Reuter found plenty of silver lining – especially after being on the receiving end of a 28-0 drubbing by Latin American champ Paraguana of Falcon, Venezuela Sunday night.
“We wanted to get back out here as soon as possible after that,” Reuter said. “This is one to grow on, and it was nice to get a zero up on the board for the opponent’s inning for a change after they scored every inning against us last night.”
Madison also enjoyed putting up some runs of its own. Ross Elliott, Jake Zadra, Ben Marvin, and Trevor Graham each had two hits. Elliott led the 11-hit attack with an RBI triple in the first, a two-run double in the third, and a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Marvin had an RBI double and a single. Graham and Zadra had two singles apiece.
