AUGUSTA – A 33-year-old Lincoln County man is being held at Kennebec County Jail on $200,000 cash bail after allegedly kidnapping and raping a 14-year-old girl Sunday night.

Albert Dumas Jr. of Juniper Lane in Whitefield was arrested late Monday afternoon outside a convenience store on Western Avenue for allegedly grabbing the girl from behind in the Capitol Street area, binding her and dragging to her a vehicle while wielding a knife, according to police Detective Lt. Keith Brann on Tuesday.

The teen was driven around in a Ford Taurus to locations in Augusta, Windsor and Whitefield, where she was repeatedly sexually assaulted at knifepoint, according to police.

Dumas’ prior convictions are gross sexual assault, kidnapping and attempted gross sexual assault, according to Maine’s sex offender Web site.

Police believe that Dumas and the victim did not know each other.

“She’s doing OK,” Brann said, noting she suffered minor physical injuries.

The abduction occurred earlier Sunday evening and was reported around midnight.

Eventually, the victim was driven back to Augusta and released, Brann said, and she went to a friend’s house to call police and her family. She was able to provide vital information to make a positive identification of Dumas, who is on probation for other sex-related convictions, he said.

A search warrant was executed at 1 p.m. Monday at Dumas’ home, where Augusta police, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department officers and the Maine State Police Evidence Response Team seized items related to the sexual assaults.

A Kennebec County sheriff’s deputy, who was stopped at a convenience store on Western Avenue, spotted Dumas’ car with him inside. Dumas was arrested around 4 p.m. on charges of Class A kidnapping and gross sexual assault, Brann said. Additional charges were pending.

Dumas is being held on $200,000 cash bail and is expected to be arraigned today via video, a jail officer said.

Lincoln County sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Jason Pease issued a reminder to residents Tuesday that if they have concerns about sex offenders residing in their town they can check the state Web site at www.state.me.us, where the sex offender registry can be accessed, or they can call their local law enforcement agency.
