Bangor site of Dog Day

BANGOR – Downtown Bangor will go to the dogs and tails will wag 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, during the Dog Day celebration. The event was so popular last year that organizers decided to offer it again.

Dogs and their owners are invited to cruise the downtown business area and take part in activities designed to cater to canines. Many businesses will offer free treats for dogs that frequent their stores.

Bangor Public Library will have dog and pet books on display from Thursday, Aug. 17, through Thursday, Aug. 31, and downtown bookstores will feature dog-related titles.

These doggie delights will be among the day’s attractions:

. Blessing of the dogs, Pickering Square, with Franciscan friars, Brothers Ken and Don.

. Doggie manicures by a doggie beauty parlor. Free dog wash in front of the Sea Dog Brewing Co., 26 Front St.

. Doggie portrait session with photo studio.

The high point of the day will be the Designer Dog Fashion Show 11 a.m.-noon in Pickering Square. Registration begins at 10 a.m. Dog owners may dress their pets in handmade or purchased creations. Judges will award prizes in several categories.

These organizations will have information available in West Market Square:

. Penobscot Kennel Club.

. Maine Greyhound Rescue.

. Bangor Humane Society.

. Doberman Rescue Unlimited.

In Pickering Square representatives from Green Acres Kennels, Downeast Dog News and Bangor Pet Resort and Spa will be available to talk about their services.

Also on hand in Pickering Square will be law enforcement dogs, service dogs that aid those with autism, and a Bow-wow-tique where one may purchase products for dogs.

Blue Gene will provide acoustic guitar music 1-3 p.m. in Pickering Square.

A “fly-ball” demonstration will be held 1-3 p.m. on the waterfront, corner of Railroad and Main streets.
