ORONO – Anna Ellis has won the naming contest for the summer mascot at the Orono Public Library.

Anna said she named the giant panda “Oreo” because “when I was younger I named foods I enjoyed after animals, since animals meant a lot to me. I named Oreos ‘panda cookies’ because of the panda’s black and white markings since Oreos are black and white as well.”

Anna received a Beanie Baby panda for winning the contest. “Oreo” will be part of the end of the summer grand prize drawing that will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, at Webster Park during the Orono Pet Show.

Throughout the summer, children have earned chances to win “Oreo” by reading books and participating in literacy activities.
