Two injured in Hampden collision

Police blamed driver inattention for a car accident after a Bangor man Thursday afternoon crashed his 1999 Kia into a parked vehicle at the R&K Variety store on Route 1A in Hampden.

Ronald Lloyd, 74, of Bangor was driving north on Route 1A, when he decided to make a right-hand turn into the store’s lot around 12:15 p.m. Lloyd struck a GMC pickup truck in which Barry Smith, 53, of Eddington sat. The impact caused Lloyd to hit his head on the windshield.

The collision sent Lloyd and his passenger, Elenor Curian, 81, of Bangor to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Curian complained of chest pains and Lloyd suffered minor abrasions on his face and had glass in his head, according to police.

Lloyd told officer Joel Small he was wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident, but due to the way Lloyd hit the windshield, Small was skeptical if the elderly man was buckled. Curian also said she was wearing her seat belt.

Smith was not injured.

Small estimated both cars each have $2,000 worth of damage.
