BANGOR – The way starting pitcher Daniel Deason was going, the only bad move U.S. Southwest region champion Tulsa, Okla., could make was taking him out of the game.
Tulsa manager Jeff Chism did just that in the fourth inning with his team leading 7-0 in an effort to give his younger pitchers some experience, but the move preceded a fourth-inning outburst that almost carried Central champ Madison, Wis., to a comeback.
A pair of insurance runs and scoreless relief from Deason – who came back out to the mound – and Mark Robinette were just enough, however, to thwart Madison’s comeback bid and pull out a 9-6 Senior League World Series win for Tulsa Thursday night at Mansfield Stadium.
“We thought it would be a lot easier than this the way it started, but they made some pitching changes on us and we didn’t adjust well,” said Chism. “We were trying to get another pitcher in tonight, but that’s one of those moves that didn’t quite work out.”
The final game of Series pool play evened Tulsa’s record at 2-2 and dropped Madison to 1-3. Neither team will advance to Friday’s semifinals.
The first six batters reached base safely for Tulsa in the first inning as it scored six runs on four hits and four walks. The big blow was struck by infielder Jon Reed, who belted a two-run double down the left-field line.
Joel Martin led Tulsa’s 13-hit attack with a double, two singles, two walks, and an RBI. It was a great way for the 16-year-old to go out.
“In regionals, I hit around .600 with a couple homers, but here I hadn’t done much at all,” Martin said. “I think it was just a case of getting relaxed. Once I settled down and got into a groove, things got better.”
Deason also seemed relaxed as he limited Madison to one hit and a walk while notching five strikeouts in the first three innings. Andrew Polly relieved him, but Madison had a rude greeting for him as Kyle Schmidt led off with a double and Ross Elliott followed with a walk. An error moved them over, Schmidt scored on a groundout, and Tony Ales’ single scored Elliott. A single, fielder’s choice, hit batter and two wild pitches plated three more runs before the last out came when Martin threw out a runner trying to steal second.
“That [pitching change] gave us a chance to get the guys going again and at one point, we were a step away from tying that up when our runner tripped at third,” said Madison coach Mike Reuter.
Madison scored a run to make it 7-6 in the fifth on a fielder’s choice, an error, a single and a Joe Pecosky sacrifice fly. Elliott would have scored from second on the single, but tripped rounding third, fell down, and had to go back.
Tulsa’s run in the second came on Drew Chism’s one-out RBI single. The last two runs came in the fifth on Martin’s one-out single, a steal, and four straight two-out singles.
Schmidt led Madison, going 3-for-3 with a double, two singles, a walk, and a run scored.
