CANAAN – A Maine State Police dive team searched the waters of Black Stream on Friday but did not find the body of Shirley Moon Atwood, a state police spokesman said.
Atwood, 35, has been missing since late July.
She had shared a trailer with Shannon Atwood, her former husband, and another woman, Cheryl Murdoch, 37. Murdoch was found dead Aug. 11, the victim of murder, police said.
Shannon Atwood, 36, was arrested Aug. 13 after a standoff with police in which Atwood allegedly threatened them with a bow and arrow.
For a week, police with cadaver-sniffing dogs have searched a wooded area off Scott Road, a dirt road off Lancaster Road, about five miles from the Atwood home, hoping to find the remains of Atwood’s ex-wife.
The litter-strewn wooded area was where law enforcement officers found Murdoch’s body.
State police spokesman Stephen McCausland said Friday that police searched the stream, which is about a quarter-mile from the Atwood home, not because of a tip or because of information Atwood provided them, but simply to be thorough.
“We wanted to eliminate that body of water as a possibility,” he said. “It’s the closest body of water to the Atwood home.”
The search is expected to continue through the weekend.
