WATERBORO – A weekend accident in which a swimmer was struck and killed by a boat was under investigation by the Maine Warden Service.

The victim was identified as Ioan Tirchila, 23, of Portland, who was swimming alone at the time.

Sgt. Tim Spahr said Tirchila was struck by a boat that was towing a water boarder. Another boat arrived at the scene and managed to take Tirchila to shore, but he died a short time later in an ambulance, the warden said.

The accident took place around 4 p.m. Saturday.
