Fun on a bun

Details magazine has lauded the crab rolls at Bagaduce Lunch in Penobscot in its September issue. In the article “22 Sandwiches that will Change Your Life,” writer Ed Levine praises the “sweet as wild blueberries” mixture of tender crabmeat, Kraft mayo, salt and pepper, all enclosed in a butter-toasted bun. “The only way to improve it is to get some double-dipped onion rings on the side,” he writes. Taste it for yourself at 19 Bridge Road (Route 176) in Penobscot, 326-4729.

Raising the barbecue

In honor of the American Folk Festival, chef Roger Gelis of Opus will trade in his saute pans and spatulas for a grill and tongs during a weekendlong barbecue on the deck. Live music, a full bar and food will be available Friday through Sunday. Reservations are not necessary, and regular dinner service, along with happy hour specials and a small plates menu, will resume on Tuesday, Aug. 29. Opus is located at 193 Broad St., across from the Heritage Stage. For information, call 945-5100

Sweet success

Raise nearly $20,000 for breast cancer research? That was far from a pie-in-the-sky goal for the owners and operators of Maine McDonald’s restaurants, who presented the Maine Cancer Foundation with a check for $19,161 last week. The money comes from a Mother’s Day fundraiser in which sales of all apple pies and “pink ribbons” in the state of Maine were earmarked for donation to the Maine Cancer Foundation. The funds will be directed toward the Women’s Cancer Fund at the Maine Cancer Foundation, whose mission is to support breast cancer research and education programs across the state.
