STORRS, Conn. – Natalie Berry scored an unassisted goal six minutes into the second half Friday to lift the University of Maine women’s soccer team opened the season with a 2-1 victory over Fairfield University at the UConn Invitational.

Christine LaBelle scored on a Marie-Andree Canuel assist in the first half for the 1-0 Black Bears. Jasmine Phillips stopped five of six shots.

Casey Frobay scored on a Ahna Johnson assist at 74:02 for 0-1 Fairfield. Brett Maron made seven saves on nine shots.

Men’s soccer

Massachusetts 2, Maine 0

At Amherst, Mass., Prince Ofosu scored a goal and assisted on the other to lead the University of Massachusetts past UMaine.

Tony Bassett scored 3:36 into the first half for 1-0 UMass. Greg Girillo had two assists and Michael Jejna also had an assist. Zack Simmons stopped one of two shots.

Giacomo Brunino made three saves on five shots for the 0-1 Black Bears.

Volleyball

Maine drops two

At Cincinnati, Kappy Lang had 40 set assists and 12 digs to lead Tennessee Tech past the University of Maine 30-16, 21-30, 30-25, 30-27 in the first match of the State Farm Bearcats Invitational. Maine also dropped the second match to Western Michigan 30-16, 30-23, 30-14.

In the first match, Amanda Lindgren had 17 digs and 11 kills for Tennessee Tech and Katie Kenline added 20 digs.

Shelly Seipp had 46 set assists and 12 digs for the Black Bears and Lindsay Allman had 13 kills and 14 digs. Jody Connacher had 19 digs, Brittany Kiehl recorded 15 kills, and Ashlee Wright had 12 digs.

In the second match, Kathryn Babcock had 13 digs and 10 kills for Western Michigan and Caitlin Strimel added 15 digs.

Connacher paced 0-2 Maine with 14 digs. Seipp had 11 set assists and Allman added nine digs.
