YORK – Traffic along a southern stretch of the Maine Turnpike was expected to be backed up for much of Sunday afternoon after a two-car accident in the northbound lane in the York-Kittery area.

Trooper Mike Cook said one man was in critical condition in a Portsmouth, N.H., hospital after the accident.

The man, who was not immediately identified, was injured after being ejected from a Mustang when it collided with a BMW and went spinning out of control. The BMW then crashed through a guardrail on the bridge over the York River and landed on top of him in a mud flat, Cook said.

The accident happened after the Mustang passed the BMW, and the BMW then tried to pass the Mustang.
