Accessible festival

Once again, the city of Bangor deserves much acclamation for another outstanding American Folk Festival. Thousands gathered under sunny skies to enjoy great musical performances, arts and crafts displays and food courts. The multi-generational attendance was truly remarkable.

The offshoot of the earlier National Folk Festival, the present version is eclipsing its predecessor in attendance and variety. Although grateful to the national production for demonstrating a truly workable format, Bangor adapted what works best and refined the process to its needs. For example, an impressive corps of volunteers from Greater Bangor, dressed in identical yellow shirts, was on hand to assist the visitors in just about every way imaginable.

The Bangor area has had a special appeal over the years to the residents from northern Penobscot and Aroostook counties. Traditional ties have been developed – economic, recreational, educational and cultural – that guarantee a steady flow of visitors to the Land of Paul Bunyan.

It’s become a very progressive area as it seems to be shedding negatives that had dragged it down for years. A major asset has been having a highway infrastructure that is keeping up with the population and economic growth.
