BANGOR – Jonathan Fellis of Mariaville has been selected as one of this year’s George Mitchell Peace Scholars. Fellis is a second-year student at Eastern Maine Community College enrolled in the electrician’s program.
The opportunity to learn from another culture has significant appeal for Fellis.
“Although my career plans are not set in stone, I feel the opportunity to study at the Cork Institute of Technology will give me a greater idea of what I will become and aid me in my future career plans,” he said. “I’m always willing to try something new and help people out.”
The George J. Mitchell Peace Scholarship is an annual scholarship exchange between Maine and Ireland established in 2000. The purpose of the scholarship is to create opportunities for international study. The scholarship is available in Maine for students enrolled in the Maine Community College System and the University of Maine System.
Two Maine Community College students and two University of Maine students are selected each year.
Fellis will depart for Cork in mid-September for a semester of study.
An active member in the college community, Fellis maintains a 3.1 cumulative grade point average. EMCC English instructor John Goldfine saw in Fellis someone with a generous heart and a love of family and nature, as expressed in Fellis’ school papers.
“Jonathan will admirably represent the United States abroad. He is a man of peace already and so an advertisement for the best of us,” Goldfine said.
Each scholarship provides the opportunity for a student to study full-time at a university or institute of technology in Ireland. Maine Community College students attend Cork Institute of Technology in Cork.
The scholarship includes tuition and fees, books, room and board, travel stipends and living expenses.
Fellis is the fourth EMCC student to receive the George Mitchell Peace Scholarship. The first year the scholarship was established, EMCC student Darren Winham was selected. In 2002, Eric Clark received the award and in 2003, Barbara Haskell was selected.
