Pownal man dies from ATV crash injuries

MONTICELLO – A 20-year-old Pownal man died Sunday morning of massive head and internal injuries received in a ATV-pickup crash Saturday afternoon .

William Dyers of 8 KD Lane died at Eastern Maine Medical Center at Bangor at 8:28 a.m. Sunday, according to Maine State Police Sgt. Julie Bergan.

Dyers was flown to EMMC by LifeFlight on Saturday afternoon after being treated at Houlton Regional Hospital for injuries received just after noon on Wotton Road in Monticello. He was in critical condition when flown to the Bangor medical facility.

Maine State Police Trooper Brian Harris is the investigator of the accident.

Harris reported that Dyers was traveling north on Wotton Road with friends, also on ATVs. Following the group was another friend, Shawn Kays, 25, of Durham, who was driving a pickup truck.

Kays was passing the ATVs. According to the investigator, when he came alongside Dyers’ ATV, Dyers “pulled a wheelie” and lost control of his 2001 Honda 400cc machine.

Dyers lost control and collided with Kays’ 2003 Ford pickup. Dyers, who was not wearing a helmet, fell from his ATV when the two machines collided.

Thrown to the roadway, Dyers suffered massive head and internal injuries.

Harris was assisted at the scene by game wardens and volunteers of the Monticello Fire Department. Dyers was taken to the hospital at Houlton by Crown Ambulance.

Dyers and Kays were staying together at a camp, police said. The entire ATV crew was from downstate.

Police said speed and alcohol were not factors in the incident. The accident remained under investigation Sunday.
