2 suspects in separate robberies indicted in Penobscot County

BANGOR – Two men accused this summer of unrelated robberies were among 30 people indicted Tuesday by the Penobscot County grand jury.

Jefrey Graddy, 45, of Kenduskeag was indicted for robbery.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 21 in Penobscot County Superior Court.

Wearing a ski mask, he allegedly entered the Trade Winds Supermarket in Corinth on Aug. 15, brandished a daggerlike knife and demanded money from a cashier. Just minutes earlier, Graddy had pumped about $25 worth of gas with a credit or debit card.

Graddy fled with about $400 in cash, according to court documents. Police arrested him at his home early the next morning after they received an anonymous tip about where he was staying.

If convicted, he faces up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000.

In an unrelated case, Robert McGonagle, 22, of Bangor was indicted for robbing a Garland Street convenience store in July in Bangor. He also was indicted for assault and on two counts of unauthorized taking for allegedly stealing items from the Eastside Market.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 21 in Penobscot County Superior Court.

McGonagle was arrested about 8:30 p.m. July 26 after he allegedly stole two beers two hours earlier from the store and shoved the clerk when she blocked the doorway.

The clerk told Bangor police she recognized McGonagle as the man who had taken beer and a magazine from the store without paying on July 14, according to the police report.

McGonagle allegedly returned to the store about 8:20 p.m. July 26. The clerk asked a customer to hold the door to keep him from entering and a male employee to stall the suspect outside while she called police. After a few minutes, McGonagle ran, according to police.

The male employee called for help as he chased the suspect. A second man grabbed McGonagle’s book bag, according to police, and the two fell to the sidewalk.

The first man caught up with McGonagle and sat on him until officers arrived, according to police. McGonagle refused to put his hands behind his back and allegedly struggled with officers when they arrived at the jail.

If convicted, McGonagle faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000.
