Time to think pink

Residents are being asked to think pink – pink tulips, that is. Volunteers in October will plant 5,000 tulip bulbs in conjunction with the Pink Tulip Project, which benefits breast cancer research and awareness.

Gibson Realty Inc., a Portland-based benefactor, has donated 15,000 tulips to be split among the Bangor-Orono area, Portland and Lewiston-Auburn.

Keep Bangor Beautiful, which will organize the effort locally, asks people to sponsor the planting of anywhere from 10 to 1,000 tulips – in memory of or in honor of a loved one – for a donation of $1 per tulip. All proceeds will benefit the Maine Cancer Foundation’s Women’s Cancer Fund.

For information on the project, visit www.mainecancer.org and click on the “merchandise” link, or e-mail pinktulips@

mainecancer.org. To get involved locally, call Katherine Guerin at Keep Bangor Beautiful, 990-1201.

Paintings by Nance Parker

The Castine Art Association is sponsoring an exhibit of paintings by Nance Parker during September at the Trinity Episcopal Church gallery on Perkins Street in Castine.

Nance Parker, master puppet builder at Shoestring Theater in Portland, has been painting contemplative women for years. Her last show at Trinity Gallery was “Domestic Madonnas.”

Her work has been featured in the Maine Cottage Furniture catalogue, as the poster art for the Maine Women’s Fund and, until its closing, at the Hay Gallery in Portland. Her puppets were part of the Maine puppeteers exhibit at the Farnsworth Museum.

The paintings are in acrylic on wood panels and the masks are papier mache and fabric. Her theater work may be seen at www.shoestringtheater.org. For further information, call Parker at 774-1502.

The Castine Arts Association is a nonprofit, community-based volunteer group organized for the purpose of promoting awareness and appreciation of visual, literary and performing arts through sponsorship of public programs and events.

The Trinity Episcopal Church Gallery is open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday and after the service on Sundays.
