Thank you for Robert C. Koehler’s excellent, very timely op-ed (“20 Gandhis needed in post-9-11 world,” BDN, Sept. 1).
A hundred years ago on Sept. 11, M.K. Gandhi, a young Indian lawyer, began the world’s first organized nonviolent movement which he aptly termed “satyagraha” (“seize the truth,” literal translation from Sanskrit) and eventually ended the British colonization of India. It is time for us to recognize 9-11 as a day of healing and peace, and not revenge.
After all, as Gandhi remarked, “Hate kills the man who hates” and “An eye for an eye will only make the whole world go blind.”
